Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

What are porcelain veneers?

Dental veneers are made out of porcelain or resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers are also known as traditional veneers. A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of tooth-colored porcelain that is placed over the surface of the teeth to improve its appearance by shaping, coloring, re-sizing, shading and aligning of the teeth. It is one of the most popular types of veneers that are used to improve the facial appearance.

They are fabricated indirectly as opposed to composite veneers. The high-quality ceramic material is custom made in such a way that they seem to naturally match the shade of the surrounding teeth.

What are the benefits of porcelain veneer?

Porcelain veneers are durable and long-lasting. They are better stain resisters as opposed to resin veneers. They last longer than other types of veneers. A lot of time is invested in the procedure of getting veneers, so the customized veneers are made in the laboratory to fit accurately in the existing structure. They require two-three visits in about six weeks or so. After the consultation, the first visit is probably where the teeth impressions are taken and the next visit would be to place them properly. They protect and preserve the shade of the teeth over time and do not change color.

Who needs porcelain veneers?

With aging, enamel coating of the teeth tends to look dull or discolored due to over-consumption of certain aerated drinks or coffee, tea, and other food items or beverages. It could also be due to root canal or other treatments where the stains from drugs or some amount of fillings were present. Porcelain veneers are used for teeth that have experienced wear and tear over the years. It also protects the surface of damaged teeth which prevents future problems.

They help fix spacing issues between teeth that could be genetic in nature. Some people are born with teeth spaces that differ from the normal and it only increases with age. They help to order irregular or uneven teeth, which may be due to teeth grinding habits. As with aging, the teeth tend to become weak and are easily susceptible to chipping, cracking and damage.
